Schaffhausen 2024 Open competition

Architecture: Gabriela Dimitrova architecture & structural design, Zurich

The open-space concept builds on a strong appreciation of the existing site and develops it further as a permeable, park-like landscape. All existing buildings and the mature tree stock are preserved and integrated as equal components of the overall concept. Clearly zoned outdoor spaces provide protected areas for children while offering publicly accessible places for the surrounding neighbourhood.

The design emphasises minimal surface sealing, natural materials, and native, non-toxic plant species to support biodiversity and microclimate regulation. Play, retreat, and movement spaces are closely connected to the topography, enhancing orientation, safety, and informal learning. The result is a robust, shared open space that strengthens the site and supports its long-term, sustainable use.
