Caixaforum, Malaga

Malaga 2024 1st Prize, open competition, joint venture with Ramon Subira Landscape Architecture

Architecture: Picha Architects, Barcelona & Ramon Subira Calmet

CaixaForum Málaga is designed as a cultural centre that integrates seamlessly into its urban and landscape context, converting Manuel Azaña Square into a new public focal point with generous green space. The scheme balances architectural form and environmental performance, with a singular organic roof that acts as a climatic shelter and modulates solar exposure throughout the year. A large outdoor garden opens to the public, serving as a green lung for the area and supporting a variety of everyday and event-based open-air activities.

The project enhances connectivity to its surroundings and engages people walking, cycling, or passing by, enriching the everyday experience of the square. Landscape and environmental considerations, such as local plant species, bioclimatic design, and water-sensitive features, are integrated to foster biodiversity, microclimate resilience, and social interaction in the open spaces around the building.
